The project was established to enhance the socio-economic situation of the farmers by informing them on the benefits of using the net house in order to protect banana production, through introducing the cable system in the banana plantation, and through building the capacities of the farmers by training them on the proper techniques of packing, cooling, storing and ripening of bananas.
The project as well aimed at selecting model farmers from each region in the South and providing guidance to other banana farmers in the region. Those objectives were all pursued through the expert’s supervision on the project and through implementing advanced cultivation and post-harvest techniques that suit the Lebanese productions.
The process showed an increase in production from 3.5 tons to 7.2 tons/ dunam and the number of exporting increased from 35,000 tons in 2007 to 70,000 tons in 2010. As well, 2000 handbook on banana packaging were distributed.
