The Hariri Foundation team participated in a regional symposium in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, entitled “Building Back Better from COVID-19 in the Arab States: Applying the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Enabling a Prevention-Oriented and Risk-Informed Approach “, organized by the United Nations for Disaster Risk Reduction-Regional Office for Arab States (UNDRR).
The Foundation launched this project to develop action plans to improve the health system in Tripoli, Saida and Tyre , particularly, health preparedness for various disasters and crises and to improve the performance of health institutions and bodies in responding to and recovering from crises. The project was implemented in partnership with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), as part of its campaign “Making Cities Resilient” (MCR 2030), with relevant municipalities and Union of Municipalities and under the supervision of the National Disaster Risk Management Unit at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.
These three plans were developed in coordination with the Disaster and Risk Management Cells in municipalities and union of municipalities and the District Medicine of the Ministry of Public Health in the Southern and Northern Lebanon governorates and the active involvement of local health institutions and bodies in determining reality and developing proposals and priority actions.
The symposium brought together national governments and local stakeholders involved in the implementation of the initiative in three countries: Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. The symposium provided an opportunity to present and discuss the project’s results and share lessons learned to come up with recommendations for necessary remedial action to address and overcome future implementation challenges.
